Melbourne’s Fed Square to Host Socceroos Live Sites

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has personally intervened to overturn a controversial decision to ban the screening of Socceroos matches at Melbourne's Federation Square.

The original move by the Melbourne Arts Precinct, which cited safety concerns following previous crowd behavior, had sparked a fierce backlash from Matildas captain Sam Kerr and football legend Craig Foster.

"I disagree with that decision - and I am overturning it," Allan announced, pledging that the government will provide necessary security support to ensure the iconic site remains open to fans.

The backflip ensures that thousands of supporters can gather to watch Australia’s Group D campaign, which kicks off against Türkiye on Sunday, June 14, at 2:00 PM AEST.

Foster hailed the reversal as a "win for the community," noting that major cities require fan zones to foster a sense of national identity during the world's biggest sporting event.

Beyond Federation Square, the Premier has promised "additional live sites" across the city to accommodate the massive demand expected for the 2026 World Cup.

Venues like AAMI Park and Rod Laver Arena are reportedly under consideration to serve as overflow hubs as the Socceroos prepare to face the United States and Paraguay.

With kickoff in North America just weeks away, Melbourne is now set to reclaim its status as a vibrant home for football fans during the green and gold’s seventh World Cup appearance.
