NFF President Denies Influencing Super Eagles AFCON Squad Selection

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has strongly refuted allegations that the federation meddled in head coach Eric Chelle’s final squad selection for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The denial comes after Chelle faced criticism for narrowing his provisional 54-man list down to the final 28 players, a process which led to accusations of high-ranking officials pushing for specific inclusions.

NFF President Denies Influencing Super Eagles AFCON Squad Selection

In an interview with former Nigerian international Segun Odegbami on Eagle 102.5 FM, Gusau addressed the rumors, cautioning the public about the current media environment. He described the information landscape as "highly polluted," pointing to the widespread actions of player agents attempting to influence public perception and team selections.

Gusau adamantly maintained his commitment to coaching autonomy:

"I will never tell a coach to pick this player or that player. Since becoming President, I have never even stayed in the same hotel as the national team during camps. I make a conscious effort not to be a distraction to the technical crew."

The NFF President stressed that the technical decisions are purely the domain of the coaching staff, emphasizing that his role is to ensure administrative support, not to interfere with sporting choices. He urged the public to be judicious when consuming information, especially the unfounded allegations frequently circulated across social media platforms.

Gusau’s defense is a direct attempt to quell the controversy and reinforce faith in the transparency of the Super Eagles’ preparations as they head into the AFCON tournament. His stance is designed to protect the independence of Coach Chelle and focus attention back onto the team's performance rather than internal politics.
